Meenakshi Amman Temple
Meenakshi Amman Temple situated in Madurai and is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi, consort of Lord Shiva. This temple follows Dravidian architecture with sculptures of mythical animals and being located on the outer sections of the Gopuram and humans, and divine being closer to the centre. The construction of this temple began in the 13th century and took around 650 years to complete with the temple’s design being based on the Vastu Shastra. The Thousand Pillar Mandapa exisiting within the northeast corner consists of 985 ornate pillars and was traditionally used for religious performances.
